Piles of Things

Piles of things (2025) installation / 10-channel sound, stone casting powder, plaster, metal, wood, textiles, repurposed objects

About / Text by Katariina Timonen (Amos Rex): Humankind’s constant need to reach out to something higher is speculated in three upward-pointing, tower-like clusters. The structures consist of human-made, quasi-random articles and objects. Amid the delicately balancing piles we can make out different layers that refer to everyday life, time, and the question of authenticity.

The moment of tipping over and failure is perpetually close. Perhaps the clumsily devised control will soon fail. Sounds come from somewhere in the middle of the piles, sometimes fusing together to form a collective, emerging and disappearing soundscape. The installation is like a performance suspended on the spot. Different ways and acts of carrying, supporting, trying, but also of waiting and resting, are repeated, piled on top of one another.
